Groovv FAQ: vinyl collection app questions, answered
Getting Started
What is Groovv?
Groovv is a vinyl collection app for iOS and Android. Catalogue your records by scanning them, track plays and cleans, see what your collection is worth, and connect with collectors who share your taste. It pairs with Discogs for release data - think of it as the personal, mobile-first layer on top of the world's vinyl database.
Is Groovv free?
Yes. The free tier includes up to 100 records, barcode scanning, 10 AI cover scans, the full Grading Assistant, Crate Flick and the other browsing views, a Wantlist of up to 25 records, and the Collectors directory. Groovv Pro unlocks unlimited records, 50 AI scans a day, collection analytics, Taste Match breakdowns and custom tags.
Is Groovv on Android?
Yes. Groovv is live on both the App Store and Google Play, and your account works across both - sign in on any device and your collection and Pro status come with you.
Do I need a Discogs account?
No. Groovv uses Discogs data for release information, but you don't need an account. If you have one, connecting it lets you import your existing collection in minutes.
Is Groovv only for vinyl?
Yes, deliberately. Scanning a CD or cassette barcode will return "no vinyl pressing found" - that's by design, not a bug.
Can I sell records through Groovv?
No. Groovv is built for the collection side - cataloguing, condition, value, browsing. For buying and selling, the Discogs marketplace is the best place there is, and we'd rather point you there than build a worse version of it. More on how the two fit together in Groovv vs Discogs.
What languages is Groovv available in?
The app itself is currently English-only. Our App Store listings are available in English, Dutch, French, German and Japanese, and in-app translations for those languages are on the roadmap. Grading terms (Mint, Near Mint, VG+) stay in English everywhere - they're the universal language of record condition.
Adding records & scanning
How do I add records?
Four ways: scan the barcode, photograph the cover or label with AI scanning, search by artist and album, or import your whole Discogs collection.
What should I photograph for the best AI scan result?
Printed text beats artwork. The back cover and the centre label almost always scan better than an artsy front cover - they carry the artist, title and catalogue number as plain text. Most records from before the mid-80s have no barcode, so the label is your best friend for older collections.
The scan found the wrong album. What do I do?
Try the back cover or centre label first - that resolves most misses. If it still can't find it, the scanner drops you into a search sheet where you can fix the artist and album by hand. Every scan result is a suggestion, never auto-added.
How many AI scans do I get?
Free accounts get 10 scans to try the feature. Pro accounts get 50 per day. Failed scans don't count against your limit.
Why did I get a "scan limit" message?
You've used your allowance - 10 total on free, 50 for the day on Pro, which resets daily. If you're seeing this and you think it's wrong, email us and we'll look at your account directly.
Can I add a record that isn't on Discogs?
Yes - manual entry lets you add anything, though records matched to Discogs get richer data (pressing details, cover art, values).
Features
What is Crate Flick?
Crate Flick is Groovv's signature browsing view - flip through your collection cover by cover, the way you'd dig through a real crate. It's the fastest way to answer "what should I put on tonight?" and it's available on the free tier.
Can I track when I play or clean a record?
Yes. Every record has a play and clean history with timestamps, so you know what you spun last week and when a record was last cleaned. Your plays also feed your Listening Stats, so you can see what you actually reach for over time.
How does the Grading Assistant work?
It walks you through grading a record against the Goldmine standard - the same scale Discogs and most sellers use - so your Mint, Near Mint and VG+ grades mean what everyone else means by them. On Pro, you can also keep a grading history with photos and notes, which is handy for tracking wear or documenting condition before a sale.
Discogs import and sync
How do I import my Discogs collection?
Connect your Discogs account in the app and your collection imports in minutes, including box sets and every vinyl format. Free accounts can import up to 100 records; Pro is unlimited.
I added records on Discogs after importing. Do I re-import?
No. Tap Sync and Groovv pulls in what's changed - additions and removals both.
Does Groovv write back to my Discogs collection?
No. Import and sync are one-way (Discogs into Groovv). Your Discogs collection is never modified.
Collection value
How is my collection's value calculated?
From live Discogs marketplace data. For each record, we look at the lowest current listing price for your pressing, then apply a small conservative adjustment (×1.2), since records typically sell above the cheapest listing. It's an estimate of market value, not an appraisal - real-world prices vary with condition, buyer and timing. We're working on access to richer sales data to make these estimates sharper.
Why does the value seem off for some records?
Estimates are only as good as the listings behind them. A pressing with one very cheap or very optimistic listing can read low or high, and obscure pressings with few listings are the least reliable. The improved pricing data we're working on will help most with exactly these cases.
Can I see the value of individual records?
Not yet - it's built and coming. We held it back until the per-record numbers are accurate enough to trust, which depends on the improved pricing data above.
Can I change the currency?
Yes - set your preferred currency in Settings and every value displays in it.
Can other people see what my collection is worth?
No, not unless you explicitly turn that on for your share page. Value never appears on your in-app collector profile.
Collectors and social
Is my collection visible to other Groovv users?
No - everything is private by default. Going public is an explicit opt-in from your Profile tab, and you can switch back any time. More on how the social side works on our social page.
Why don't I appear in the Collectors directory?
The directory lists public profiles with more than 10 records, a display name and an avatar. Set those and you'll appear.
What is Taste Match?
A score of how much your collection overlaps with another collector's - by the records you share and the genres and eras you both collect. Everyone sees the score; Pro unlocks the full breakdown, including the records you share and your rarest shared pressing.
Do shared records need to be the same pressing?
No - if you own the UK pressing and they own the French one, that's still a shared record. Only the "rarest shared pressing" highlight means the literal same pressing.
What's the difference between my public profile and my share link?
They're independent. Your share link is a web page you can send to anyone, app or not. Your in-app profile is for other Groovv collectors. Each has its own switch, so you can have either, both, or neither.
Can I block or report someone?
Yes - both are on every collector profile, behind the menu in the top corner. Blocking hides you from each other completely.
Groovv Pro and billing
What does Pro include?
Unlimited records, 50 AI scans a day, collection analytics and value estimates, Taste Match breakdowns, grading history with photos, custom tags, CSV export, and unlimited Discogs import and sync. Full detail on the pricing page.
How much does Pro cost?
$1.99/month, $12.99/year, or $29.99 once for lifetime (USD - your store shows local pricing).
I bought Pro but the app says I don't have it
First, check you're signed in with the same method you used when you bought it (see the account question below - this is the cause nine times out of ten). Then tap Restore Purchases in Settings. If it still doesn't stick, email us - we can see what happened on our end and fix it quickly.
Does Pro work across my devices?
Yes. Pro is attached to your Groovv account, so it unlocks on any device you sign into - including across iOS and Android. Manage or cancel the subscription in the store you bought it from.
What happens to my records if I cancel Pro?
Nothing is ever deleted. Your collection stays exactly as it is and remains fully viewable. If you're over 100 records, adding new ones is paused until you're back on Pro.
Account and data
I signed in and my collection is gone. What happened?
Almost always this: you signed in with a different method than you signed up with (email vs Apple vs Google), which creates a separate, empty account. Sign out and sign back in with your original method - your records are there. Stick to one sign-in method to avoid this.
Does Groovv work offline?
Yes - your collection is stored on your device, so you can browse it without signal (handy in a record store basement). Changes sync when you're back online.
Can I export my collection?
Yes - CSV export is included with Pro, from Settings.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings > Account > Delete Account. It removes your account and data - it's immediate and can't be undone.
Do you sell my data?
No. Your collection data exists to power your features, nothing else. See the privacy policy for the full detail.
